Year 2

YEAR TWO

Welcome to Year 2. The teachers responsible for these classes are Mr Rebours and Miss Daly. This is an exciting year in your child’s school journey and forms a transition from Key Stage 1 to Key Stage 2. Consequently, developing independence and maturity are central goals throughout the year. It is pleasing to see how the children develop and grow in this year group.

Throughout the year

This term we have been very excited about our history topic on famous people from the past. We have learnt about Florence Nightingale, Samuel Pepys and the Great Fire of London. We will be moving on to study Guy Fawkes and Neil Armstrong. In the Spring we will move on to study local history and geography and in the Summer we will learn about Africa.

the children will be able to take part in different experiences to enrich their learning. We have already had Pirate Day and have made an inspiring start to Halloween Literacy Boot Camp. Out of school activities planned for the year include trips into the local environment, the beach and the Royal Square. We will visit the zoo as part of our science curriculum the zoo and will plant seeds I outside spaces. We hope also to welcome visitors such as Safety Sam and put on some performances to demonstrate the things we have learnt throughout the year. We are planning a short dance performance at 2pm on the 11th of December in the Sports Hall and hope you will all be able to attend. We will also be presenting an assembly early next year.

Year 2 is all about gaining confidence in learning, becoming more independent and developing more mature social skills. The children are all making progress with these skills, so thank you for your support. Academic knowledge and understanding is also progressing and expectations will gradually rise as the year goes on. Please continue to support your child with homework especially if they are receiving extra work to accelerate progress. Ensuring that your child has their reading book and diary every day and that spelling folders are returned on Fridays makes our routines so much easier. Please arrange to see us should you have any queries about your child’s learning.

Year 2

CURRICULUM

TEACHERS: Mr Rebours and Miss Daly

ENGLISH – In English, the children will explore a range of fiction. They will develop their knowledge of sentence constructions, joining two or more sentences with ‘and’ and use further punctuation. The children will listen and respond to poems in a range of different ways. They will explore poetic language and identify simple rhythm and rhyme. They will draft, edit and compose their own poems and read them aloud.

We will be looking at non-fiction text and explore the big question: ‘Could you keep an orang-utan as a pet?’ The children will be finding information and collecting facts. They will write their own instructions and design their own mini non-fiction book. 

MATHS – We will be adding and subtracting 1 and 2 digit numbers and we will be learning our 2s, 5s and 10 times tables. We will work on our understanding and recognition of money and solve problems including finding change. The children will learn to measure length to the nearest centimetre and develop their understanding of whole, half and quarter turns, both clockwise and anticlockwise. 

SCIENCE – Our Science topic this term is ‘Animals Including Humans’ and the children will be finding out about the basic needs of animals. We will also study the lifecycles of a range of animals. In the second half of the term we will focus on ‘The uses of Everyday Materials’.

COMPUTING – This term in computing we will be continuing learning how to code simple algorithms using a program called “Scratch”. We will also return to word processing skills, working on using a variety of tools to create different document types such as a poster. E-Safety shall also be taught as the children will eventually start using Google as a search tool. 

ARTWe will be exploring drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques. 

PSHE – This term we will be focussing on ‘Being Me in my World’ and explore the topic ‘Changing Me.’ 

HISTORY – In history we will be learning about historical famous people such as Florence Nightingale and Neil Armstrong. This will also link into learning about Samuel Pepys and his account of the Great Fire of London.

MUSIC – The children will be continue to learn new songs and will continue to learn different terminology such as beat and pitch. They will also have the opportunity to use a variety of instruments.


Homework

Reading – Children will bring home books every night. Library books may be enjoyed for the whole week as long as they are returned ready for the next library session. It is important to read as much as possible with your child. Please read with them every day for at least 10 minutes. Where a book has not already been written in the diary please write down the title yourselves and sign to show it has been read. This may include books from home. 

Spelling – Spellings will be sent home weekly. Please help your child to learn these. The best method is for your child to write the spellings out until they are confident with them. This year, spellings will be given out on a Friday to be tested the following Friday. 

Maths – Maths homework will be in the form of requests to practice skills such as tables, problem solving activities, games or written work will also come home. As last year, this will be given out on a Friday to be completed by the following Monday. 

Depending on your child’s needs other activities such as phonics or handwriting practice may also require your support.

Classroom equipment

All children will be provided with the necessary equipment e.g. pencils, rubbers etc… Please do not send your child in with a pencil case.

Water bottles

All children should bring in a water bottle everyday. These should only be filled with water and not juice drinks.

Lunch and snacks

Lunch for Year 2 is between 12pm to 1pm. Children are given half an hour to play outside and then get a half hour to eat in their classrooms.

Children should bring in one healthy snack to have at break time.
